Residential Estate Landscape Design in Islington, North London

Client Type: Estate Management

Location: Islington, London

Site Scale: Medium

Scope of Work: Full Landscape Design and Project Management

  • Project Brief and Vision

Commissioned to transform a private residential estate in Islington (N1), the design reimagines communal spaces to improve functionality, resident wellbeing, and long-term value. Developed in close collaboration with the client, the brief prioritised durability, low maintenance, and visual clarity—resulting in a cohesive, contemporary landscape integral to the estate’s identity.

  • Pergolas and Garden Rooms

Two bespoke brick-and-hardwood pergolas define semi-private outdoor rooms within the shared garden. Designed to match the estate’s architecture, they provide shaded seating, spatial structure, and sculptural presence—built for longevity with minimal upkeep.

  • Central Rock and Gravel Garden

A Japanese-inspired garden introduces calm and visual contrast at the heart of the site. Featuring natural boulders, raked gravel, and textured planting, it encourages movement and contemplation, reinforcing the landscape’s experiential quality.

  • Integrated Materials and Planting

The scheme uses a refined palette of robust, high-quality materials:

    • Silver-grey granite paving and resin-bound gravel for durability and warmth
    • Brick edging to echo existing architecture
    • Low-level lighting for safety and ambience
    • Seasonal planting to soften edges and support biodiversity

These elements combine visual elegance with long-term resilience.

  • Infrastructure and Accessibility

Secure cycle parking and custom timber bin stores are discreetly integrated into the landscape, promoting sustainability and order. Level thresholds, gentle gradients, and clear surfaces ensure inclusive access, aligning with Building for a Healthy Life principles.

  • Outcome and Legacy

Praised by both client and residents, the design resolved long-standing issues while creating a welcoming, high-quality environment. Seamlessly integrated with the estate’s architecture, it now serves as a model for urban landscape refurbishment—demonstrating how thoughtful investment can elevate everyday communal life.
